West Kingston, RI – Early voters in West Kingston this morning were asked to hand back their ballots before voting. With no votes cast, poll workers realized that they had received incorrect ballots from the State Board of Elections.
The ballots were received from the State Board of Elections in locked containers according to the Town. The containers, that arrive locked and sealed were not opened until election day, prior to poll opening.
Steve Alfred, South Kingstown Town Manager explained the process outside Matunuck Elementary School after casting his own ballot.
“We received the wrong ballots,” said Alfred. “No votes were cast. Six to eight ballots were passed out and those individuals were asked to return them. The Board of Elections was then contacted.”
Accommodations were made and voters were asked to cast their ballots at one of two other South Kingstown sites, Worden’s Pond or Boss Arena. Correct ballots arrived mid-morning and voting resumed.
All voters who were in line at West Kingston and other Town polling places were allowed to vote.
