Dear Deadbeat Dad…I Have a Voice

Dear Deadbeat Dad,

  • When you didn’t pay your child support, I knew. No one had to tell me.

The money didn’t come out of the machine – again.

  • When the money didn’t come out of the machine, we had to go back home.

On the way back home, the car ran out of gas.

  • When the car ran out of gas, the police came.

When the police came, my mom had to tell the officer that there was no money in the bank.

  • When my mom told the officer, he shook his head. He told my mom not to worry.

When the officer told my mom not to worry, she started to cry. She didn’t want me to see, so the officer talked sports with me.

  • When the officer was talking sports with me, another police car came.

When the other officer was talking to mom, he said someone was a loser and someone’s kind were a bunch of bums.

  • When the officer was talking to mom, he made her smile and laugh.

When he made mom smile and laugh, I wished that mom had married him.

  • When you didn’t pay your child support, the police put gas in the car.

When the police put gas in the car, they called me buddy.

  • When the policemen called me buddy, I knew I would never be like you.

When the policeman put gas in the car, my mom asked where she could send the money to pay them back.

  • When mom said she would drop the money at the police station, the officer said if she tried, he would arrest her.

When the officer said he would arrest mom if she tried to pay for the gas, he made mom smile and laugh.

  • When he made mom smile and laugh, I knew I would never be like you.

When you didn’t pay your child support, no one had to tell me.

  • When you didn’t pay your child support, I was embarrassed.
  • When you didn’t pay your child support, my mom was embarrassed.
  • When you didn’t pay your child support, the police were embarrassed.
  • When you didn’t pay your child support, the police helped us.
  • When you didn’t pay your child support, I knew I would never be like you.
