Boston – The National Weather Service (NWS), Boston/Taunton issued a marine storm warning and Hazardous Weather Outlook on Saturday for Rhode Island Sound and Block Island Sound.
A Hazardous Weather Outlook was also issued extending from Montauk, NY into Massachusetts and Rhode Island Waters.
VINEYARD SOUND-RHODE ISLAND SOUND-BLOCK ISLAND SOUND-MASSACHUSETTS BAY AND IPSWICH BAY-COASTAL WATERS FROM MONTAUK NY TO MARTHAS VINEYARD EXTENDING OUT TO 20 NM SOUTH OF BLOCK ISLAND
The Hazardous Weather outlook encompassed Massachusetts and Rhode Island’s coastal waters.
Warning of dangerous conditions to impact coastal waters, NWS cautioned mariners of an extremely intense storm developing east-southeast of New England on Sunday, producing wind gusts to storm force over the near shore waters and hurricane force over Eastern Coastal Waters.
The strongest winds were predicted east and southeast of Cape Cod.
The warning is in effect from 4 a.m. on Sunday through 5 a.m. Monday.
Freezing Spray Hazard Likely
NWS also extended a heavy freezing spray warning from 10 a.m. Sunday through 7 a.m. Monday morning.
A HEAVY FREEZING SPRAY WARNING MEANS HEAVY FREEZING SPRAY IS EXPECTED TO RAPIDLY ACCUMULATE ON VESSELS. THESE CONDITIONS CAN BE EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS TO NAVIGATION. THE COAST GUARD URGES MARINERS TO ENSURE THEIR LIFE SAVING EQUIPMENT REMAINS FREE OF ICE. IT IS ALSO RECOMMENDED THAT MARINERS NOT TRAINED TO OPERATE IN THESE CONDITIONS ORVESSELS NOT PROPERLY EQUIPPED TO DO SO REMAIN IN PORT OR AVOID THE WARNING AREA. ~ NWS Boston/Taunton
