Rhode Island legislator recommends internment camps for Syrian refugees

Providence, RI – State Sen. Elaine Morgan (R) a legislator from Rhode Island, one of the country’s 13 founding colonies, on Tuesday recommended the internment of potential Syrian refugees in segregated settlement camps.

In what was believed to be a response to constituent concern, Morgan sent an email to colleagues explaining her hard line on refugee protections and harsh perception of the Muslim people.

“The Muslim religion and philosophy is to murder, rape, and decapitate anyone is is a non Muslim. We definitely need to stop this nonsense I agree! this is a major threat to our nation’s security and people.” – Senator Elaine J. Morgan, Rhode Island

The hysteria and concern over refugee asylum comes in the wake of the bombings and massacre of innocent civilians in Beirut and Paris last week.

“I feel the exact same way, I do not want our governor bringing in any Syrian refugees,” Morgan wrote. “I think our country is under attack. I think this is a major plan by these countries to spread out their people to attack all non Muslim persons. I think the protection of our US citizens and the United States of America should be the most important issue here.”

Morgan joins her Republican counterparts in Washington, D.C. in opposition to refugees asylum with the House poised to vote on a bill to halt President Obama’s relocation plan. If successful, the bill would stop 10,000 displaced Syrian refugees from entering the country.

“If we need to take these people in we should set up refugee camp to keep them segregated from our populous,” said Morgan in her email. “The Muslim religion and philosophy is to murder, rape, and decapitate anyone is is a non Muslim. We definitely need to stop this nonsense I agree! this is a major threat to our nation’s security and people. When our government was formed the top priority intended for the government was security and safety of our people.”

Morgan came under fire nationally for her harsh characterization and recommendations. A freshman legislator, the senator later backed off her written statement, saying that she had sent it prior to editing and only meant to lend her harsh criticisms to Muslim extremists.

The House bill, H.R. 4038, the American Safety Against Foreign Enemies Act of 2015, submitted by Homeland Security Committee Chair Michael McCaul (R-TX) and Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC) imposes strict guidelines and oversight for refugee admission into the United States.

“America has a proud tradition of welcoming refugees into our country, and we lead the world in humanitarian assistance. However, we also must put proper measures in place to ensure our country’s safety,” said Chairman McCaul.

Hudson termed the bill a common sense, reasonable bill that would halt the administration’s plan to take in thousands of refugees from Iraq and Syria until it can assure no terrorists or individuals with radical sympathies or views will be admitted.

The House is expected to vote on the bill on Thursday.
