The Morning Joe panel on Wednesday blasted Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz with co-host Mika Brzezinski calling upon Schultz to step down for her biased handling of the Democratic Presidential Nomination run-up and treatment of U.S. Senator and Democratic Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders.
“She should step down. She should step down.” – Mika Brzezinski
Joined in the discussion of Wasserman Schultz’s mishandling of the Democratic process and in agreement were host Joe Scarborough, Mike Barnicle and Willy Geist. Responding to comments made by the DNC Chair to MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and Chris Matthews on Tuesday evening, the panel hit Wasserman Schultz hard on her blatant scale-tipping tactics exacted in favor of former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
“This has been very poorly handled from the start,” Brzezinski said. “It has been unfair. They haven’t taken him (Sanders) seriously and it starts, quite frankly with the person that we just heard speak.”
Wasserman Schultz blamed Sanders and his campaign for the unrest at the Nevada Democratic Convention and subsequent harassment experienced by the state committee chair, Roberta Lange. Lange and the committee enacted temporary rules without proper procedures straying outside the boundaries of Democracy and disregarding established rules to effectively negate 58 Sanders delegates. That action set in motion a string of events that weighted the convention in favor of Clinton, drawing ire from thousands of individuals (including Clinton supporters) inside the convention room.
“Why would Bernie Sanders politely get in line for the Democratic Party,” asked Scarborough. “I sure as hell wouldn’t if the party I was a member of treated me like this, rigged the debate process, rigged Iowa, rigged the entire thing going forward. If the Republican Party did that, I’d say ‘go straight to hell. I’m running as an independent.’ ”
“Debbie Wasserman Schultz is leading a bag job.” – Mike Barnicle
Brzezinski, without hesitation also answered that the DNC expectation of submission from Sanders campaign was simply “because the Hillary Clinton people said so.”
Barnicle noted that Sanders and his campaign had a legitimate right to be angry over the treatment they received from the Democratic Party throughout the process. “Bernie Sanders has been leading a movement for 50 years,” Barnicle said. “Sometimes that movement has included only himself, but now he has a huge following. People are actually listening to him, paying attention to him, believe in him and the causes he has espoused.”
“Debbie Wasserman Schultz is leading a bag job and there’s a big difference between the two.”
