Wrong-way driver takes the life of Jamestown Patrolman Ryan Bourque

Jamestown, RI – It was late Sunday evening when Patrolman Ryan Bourque finished his 3-11 p.m. shift with the Jamestown Police Department. The evening marked his one-year anniversary with the department.

Patrolman Bourque was traveling home to Coventry on I-95 South when his car was struck head-on by a vehicle heading the wrong way in the high speed lane. The accident occurred at approximately 12:07 a.m. Troopers from the State Police Wickford and Hope Valley Barracks responded to the accident in the area of Exit 7 in East Greenwich.

 Officer Bourque sustained fatal injuries from the crash. According to the Jamestown Police Department, Officer Bourque was just 24 years old and was a 2015 graduate of the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy and 2009 graduate of Bishop Hendricken High School.

The Rhode Island State Police released the following information concerning the on-going investigation. A black Toyota Camry, operated by Dejae T. Pizarro, age 23, of 7302 Avalon Drive in Bedford, Massachusetts, was traveling north, in the high speed lane of Route 95 South. At a point approximately 500 feet north of Exit 7, Pizarro’s vehicle struck a white Dodge Charger head on. The operator of the Dodge was identified as Ryan J. Bourque, age 24, of 28 Allison Avenue in Coventry. Both Pizarro and Bourque died as a result of injuries sustained.

The State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit as well as the Forensic Services Unit are assisting in the investigation.
